Accurate, Fast Multibody Dynamic Analysis of High-Speed, Compliant Gears

主讲人 : Prof. Robert Parker

Gears have recently been introduced in high-speed, high-torque industrial systems where components must be lightweight. These gears are thin and deform elastically when in operation. The high speeds and focus on weight reduction cause gear vibration that differs from conventional gears, including: vibration of the gears as elastically compliant bodies, resonance, gyroscopic effects, nonlinearity, and parametric instability. New dynamic analysis tools are needed. The seminar will present key ideas behind a new flexible-body, multibody dynamics software tool focused on gear/bearing transmission systems. The formulation distinguishes itself from existing software in: a) the accuracy of its contact model (for example, contact surfaces are modeled with tolerance less than 0.1 mm), and b) computational efficiency that allows rapid dynamic analysis across a wide range of operating speeds. High-precision contact analysis is performed at each gear tooth and bearing roller at every time step of the simulation. This avoids the large approximations of traditional models that rely on one or more “mesh stiffnesses” to model gear tooth contact. The software can analyze full transmissions with any configuration of gears (including helical and spiral bevel) and bearings (including roller, ball, and tapered roller).

主讲人简介:

Prof. Parker is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah. Previously, he was the L.S. Randolph Professor and Department Head at Virginia Tech, a University Distinguished Professor and the Executive Dean at the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute, and a Professor at Ohio State University. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. Parker’s research examines the vibration and stability of high-speed mechanical systems. One major focus has been the vibration of gear and power transmission systems. His research has been sponsored by government agencies and aircraft engine, helicopter, automotive, wind turbine, and power generation companies, where methods developed in his research have been instrumental in solving problems with economic impact exceeding $100M. His 150+ journal papers have been cited over 13,000 times with an h-index of 59.

Prof. Parker is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Institute for Acoustics and Vibration. He received the 2015 ASME N. O. Myklestad Award for “major innovation in vibration research and engineering.” He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sound and Vibration and Mechanism and Machine Theory, and served seven years as Editor for the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics.

Prof. Parker has been a Visiting Fellow at Polytechnic University of Turin, Risø National Lab (Denmark), the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, Tokyo University, NASA Glenn Research Center, and INSA Lyon.
